Learn to palatalize digeut and tieut batchim sounds when the following vowel initial is ‘이’ or ‘히’.
The three batchim palatalization rules you will learn are:
1) digeut ㄷ batchim followed by 이 makes 지
2) digeut ㄷbatchim followed by 히 makes 치
3) tieut ㅌ batchim followed by 이 makes 치
What is palatalization? Non palatal consonant sounds like ㄷ and ㅌ are palatalized to make ㅈ and ㅊ sounds when certain vowel initials follow the batchim in Korean.
I explain how these two batchim sounds are palatalized and why these pronunciation sound changes occur.
Study the three palatalization rules with me, and why this phenomenon happens when ‘이’ or ‘히’ follows.
I have added examples of palatalization in the English language so you have a better understanding of when the process occurs.
After watching the video, try the reading practice at the end without any English romanization to test your Korean reading skills! And remember to palatalize!
If you haven’t learned the Korean alphabet, you must watch my previous lessons to catch up!
